How to find and verify your GA4 measurement ID

Find the correct web stream and check that your live tagging sends events to the intended GA4 destination.

To find a GA4 measurement ID, open the correct Google Analytics account and property, then go to Admin > Data collection and modification > Data streams. Select the Web tab, open your website's stream and copy the measurement ID from the stream details. It begins with G-. These are the steps in Google's measurement ID guide.

Choose the right property and web stream first

If you manage several sites, start by checking the selected account, property name and stream URL. Copying a correctly formatted ID from the wrong property still sends data to the wrong destination. A property can contain more than one stream, so the property name alone is not enough.

  1. Open Admin in Google Analytics.
  2. Under Data collection and modification, choose Data streams.
  3. Select Web and open the stream for the intended website.
  4. Copy the G- measurement ID shown in the stream details.
  5. Record which website, property and stream it belongs to in your internal tagging notes.

Tell measurement IDs, tag IDs and container IDs apart

The measurement ID identifies a GA4 web data stream. It is different from the property's numeric ID and the numeric stream ID. Do not paste those numeric identifiers into a field asking for a measurement ID.

A Google tag can have several tag IDs, including IDs beginning with GT-, G- or AW-, and can connect to multiple destinations. The tag ID visible in an implementation therefore need not be the exact G- string you copied. Inspect its connected destinations before deciding it is wrong. See Google's definition of a tag ID.

A GTM- container ID identifies a Google Tag Manager container. It is not your GA4 measurement ID. In Tag Manager, the current tag type is Google tag; it replaced the older GA4 Configuration tag. GA4 Event tags still use a measurement ID. Google explains the tag change and destination behaviour.

Verify the destination, then verify events

Check the implementation you actually use: a website integration, direct Google tag or Tag Manager. For Tag Manager, review the Google tag, its destinations, trigger and published container version. An unpublished workspace change is not the version visitors are using. For a direct installation, compare the configured destination with the intended stream.

Use Tag Assistant to inspect the live setup and check for duplicate events. The problem to avoid is two implementations sending the same event twice, not the mere presence of Tag Manager alongside another Google tag. Do not remove an existing installation just because you see different ID prefixes.

Then use GA4 Realtime or DebugView to check events from a controlled visit, with the consent and browser settings you intend to test. Matching an ID does not prove that events are collected once, reach the right stream or carry the correct parameters. Standard reports can take 24-48 hours to process data, according to Google's collection verification guide.

A useful release check

For example, if a live site unexpectedly sends events to a staging property, compare the published configuration with the intended production stream. Correct the destination through your normal reviewed release process, then check a fresh visit. Do not treat the copied ID as an API password, or try to fix historical reporting by repeatedly changing it.
